Anemia is a disease when the body does not produce a good amount of required RBCs or reduces the oxygen-carrying pigment i.e., hemoglobin. There are various types of anemia where some are the reasons of poor dietary intake, less production of required RBC’s, or get the RBC destroyed easily, or the genetics, which can be preventable and non-preventable.
Iron deficiency anemia is one the most common type, as the name suggests iron is required to make hemoglobin which is a protein in RBCs that carries oxygen. This iron requirement is fulfilled through diet or the old RBCs. When stored iron is depleted it affects hemoglobin production. Iron supply is reduced because of the inadequacy of food intake, no absorption from the gut, and increase blood loss from the body.
Anemic people are easily identified as shows some of the most common symptoms like pale skin, increase of cravings towards non-nutritive substances like chalk, paint, or ice. Anemia is most common in women especially in the growth spurt periods or at the time of pregnancy as the requirement for iron-rich food is more during these phases.
According to recent reports, Anemia is a serious global public health problem that particularly affects young children and pregnant women. WHO estimates that 42% of children less than 5 years of age and 40% of pregnant women worldwide are anemic.
Having caffeinated drinks must be reduced as they lower the absorption of iron on the other hand increase the consumption of fruits with vitamin C and antioxidants like green leafy vegetables, beans, broccoli, spinach, oranges, grapefruit, strawberry and tomatoes.
Although one must consult the physician immediately after self-observation of initial symptoms which could be confirmed after clinical examination and blood reports. Prescription of medications with iron tablets helps in maintaining the condition although taking medications without consulting a physician for a prolonged period could leave toxic effects on the body.
Iron deficiency anemia is an easily treatable disease in most of the cases and could be controlled with easy modification.
